Over the last several months, the church I serve as Preaching Pastor has been working itself through the Book of Colossians. The book, written from a jail cell by the Apostle Paul essentially has two aims:
- Tell you who Jesus is (Chapter 1-2)
- Tell you how you should live in light of who Jesus is (Chapter 3-4)
One of the most powerful verses in the book is 3:17
Colossians 3:17 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Consider for a moment, the ramifications of this command.
Whatever we do? Really?
Every word? Every deed? All of life should be done “in the name of the Lord Jesus”?
If this is true, this means that there is no “work you” and another “church you”. There is no “spiritual you” and another “secular you”. There is just YOU! If this is true, then we should closely examine our life and ask: Can I worship Jesus by saying or doing __________?
Charles Spurgeon put it bluntly…
“See how our being Christians does not relax the bonds of our Christian relationship, but it calls us to the higher exercise of the responsibilities and duties connected therewith. Do not draw any line of demarcation, and say, “So far is secular, and so far is religious.” Let your whole life be religious; and if there is anything proposed to you, in which you cannot glorify God, do not touch it.”
To follow Jesus is to hand over everything you have and everything you are to Him for His purposes. This means that everything we say and everything we do represents an opportunity to worship and display the worth of Jesus and the power of His name.
